Another Musical Rant

The Mindless Rant

I’ve been thinking lately, I know I’m not musician or anything but I raised among them and most of them are awesome. By I mean awesome, i don’t mean about their music or anything. Heck, some of them make music that I don’t even understand but I admire the way they put their heart through their song and play it out. Some might say that they will never go anywhere with that kind of music, some might say they are stupid, but time shows that great musician becoming great because they simply being themselves through their music.

Honesty, I think that’s what’s been missing from music I hear recently. Seriously, what are you make it for? If I want to make money, I can (which already are, by the way) work from 9 to 5 and get the stable income. I mean, what the fuck, if I have to continuously make music that I don’t like, sing a song that I think is dumb by default, I’d rather stick on my job since what’s the fucking difference does it make from having a 9 to 5 job? The only difference is the degree and education and prolly the popularity and the hot chicks. But the latter can be gained from working 9 to 5 too, some of my friends are experienced on that (you know who you are :P).

Going Major

Is this that important? Sure, you can be popular and rich if you’re lucky, but there’s always consequences, and we all know that. I already mentioned previously about making and playing music that you don’t like, no? If you don’t have strong enough characteristic in you, you’d only be a clay doll for the people on the management. They can shape you the way they want to be, put you on the shelf, and cross their fingers. If you sell, good. If you don’t, they gonna replace you with the next clay doll with enhanced look and music learning from your mistake. I may not experienced this myself, but I surely watch and learn.

Some say that making music is not always about yourself. It’s about letting the people enjoy the music that you make which means, you can’t be selfish on making music. True. To make people enjoy you have to make something that they can hear without twitching their eyes. But this doesn’t mean you have to make something exactly like what they want to hear. There’s a difference between following the stream and compromising with it. For example, not everyone like to hear Hard Rock, that’s why they create Ballad Rock for the mellow-eared.

(Of course, that’s a very simple analogy. But at least I can show the big picture.)

No, I’m not saying “just throw your guitar and get 9 to 5”. I’m not saying “let’s all burn the mainstream media and sing Anarchy in INA” either. I just want to ask: why don’t you be honest to yourself and make something that you actually want to make? The industry is always changing, the listener’s preferences never stay the same for a long period, if you make something according what’s popular now, in the next year you’ll be a forgotten pile of shit that might be lucky enough to get into the VH1 “pop of the last decade”.

(From my other Facebook note again, not in the mood on writing something new)

Why Inter-Religion debate is stupid?

Because it just is by default.

Growing up in a very diverse community making me a pretty loose person that despise fanaticism, from religion until boyband. It kinda make me laugh when some of my friends back in high school try to convert me into “real, pure, 100% moslem untainted by this catholic school”. Here’s an illustration how it went (mind that I kinda forget the details since it’s already a few years back):

friend 1 : Can, do you believe in God?

me : Duh…

friend 1 : No, I just never see you on Friday’s prayer.

me : Nah, I don’t feel like it. Besides, I don’t believe in religion.

friend 1 : Then you’re an atheist!

me : No, I believe in God, not religion.

friend 1 : Then who is your God?

me : He’s… God! How is this relevant again?

friend 1 : Who your God is depends on your religion. That’s why we have Alloh and Allah

me : Wait a minute…

friend 1 : What?

me : That’s linguistics!

friend 1 : No, that’s faith.

me : Then religionless people have no God?

friend 1 : Yes, and that makes you an atheist.

me : Hey, I believe in God, okay? What differs YOUR God and THEIR god anyway?

friend 1 : My God don’t breed.

friend 2 : Excuse me, what did you just say? (apparently he’s overhearing)

friend 1 : My God don’t breed

friend 2 : Well at least my God allows His book to be translated.

friend 1 : And revised by human.

friend 2 : At least it’s not twisted to allow massacre!

friend 1 : Who said you don’t? Remember the crusaders?

friend 2 : You twist your Book to allow Polygamy!

friend 1 : It’s for their own good.

friend 2 : Says who?

friend 1 : My prophet have wives, and they are happy!

friend 2 : Prophet? Oh, the one with no face?

friend 1 : We respect him by not drawing his face. At least he’s keep his clothes on!

friend 2 : You’re a jerk

friend 1 : You’re a dick

(and this is the moment where I sneak out of the room)

With all due respect to the religious people out there, please stop ruining the value of your own religion. No religion is better than the others, and please, please. Stop trying to convert each other. There’s something bigger than your ego in religion.
